Three Pro Tips To Help You Fill A Skip Bin For The First Time

Blog

If you have recently engaged in a DIY home improvement project on your property, perhaps installing new cabinetry or finally installing a new shed, you will have a considerable amount of rubbish to get rid of. You could be thinking that all you need to do is hire a skip bin and toss the unwanted debris inside it. The reality, though, is the skip bin needs to be filled correctly if the professionals are to remove it safely. Moreover, you should note that if hazardous materials are inside the skip or if the skip is overloaded, the providers would charge you more or, worse yet, refuse to remove it altogether and charge you for the additional days. If this is your first time leasing a skip bin, here are some pro tips to ensure that you fill it accordingly.

Start with the heaviest waste materials

If you will be throwing away concrete, timber or other dense materials, these should be the first items that go into the skip. A rule of thumb to keep in mind when filling the skip bin is to maintain its centre of gravity. Thus, not only should the heavy items go to the bottom, but they should be spread out evenly too so that one side of the skip is not leaning, as this could cause the entire skip to fall over once it starts to get full. Lastly, try to lay these heavy items as flat as possible too so that you are leaving sufficient space to add more waste into the skip bin.

Disassemble or break apart cumbersome items

Once you have laid down the heaviest items at the bottom of the skip, you should then proceed to break apart large items to maximise on space inside the skip. For instance, if you eliminate your old cabinets to install brand new ones, it is inadvisable to throw the cabinets into the skip in their assembled states. By breaking them apart, you will be capable of laying each piece of the cabinetry flat in the skip. You should note that this step is crucial irrespective of what type of waste you created at your property. For example, if you had carried out an extensive landscaping project, large branches and shrubbery should be cut down so that the organic waste can fit into the skip easily.

Isolate hazardous waste items

As mentioned earlier, hazardous waste supplies should not go into the skip without the knowledge of the professionals. With that in mind, anything that can be classified as flammable, corrosive or toxic should be left out of the skip bin. You can then request the providers to eliminate these hazardous waste materials for you in the correct manner. Examples of household waste materials that will be considered hazardous include paint supplies, cleaning supplies, fluorescent tubes and more.
